A QR code printing checklist for customer signup
Test the actual printed QR code at the distance and lighting customers will use. A sharp code is only part of the job: its destination and the full subscription confirmation path must work too.
Choose size through a real scan test
There is no single print size that works for a counter card, shop window, and distant poster. The amount of data in the code, print quality, viewing distance, and camera all affect scanning. Print a sample at the intended size and try several ordinary phones before committing to a batch.
Keep a clean light margin around the code. DENSO WAVE specifies a quiet zone four modules wide on every side for a standard QR code. Do not crop that margin, put lettering inside it, or stretch the image to fit a narrow sign. If the image has a smaller border, leave additional unprinted white space in the sign layout to create the full quiet zone.
Before you send
- Use a dark code on a plain light background and retain the clear outer margin.
- Print the original downloaded image without stretching or decorative overlays.
- Test through any glass, laminate, or sign holder you will actually use.
- Open the page on mobile data and complete a confirmed signup, not just a camera scan.
Message examples to adapt
These are original examples. Replace bracketed details and check every promise before using them.
Check installed signs again
A successful desk test does not prove the sign works at its final location. Reflections, a curved holder, low evening light, or a queue blocking the code can change the result. Repeat the test after installation.
Inspect signs when cleaning the counter or changing seasonal displays. Replace damaged copies and rescan after changing the signup destination. Keep a text link alongside the QR for people who need another route.
Common questions
Can I put a logo over the code?
Preserving an unmodified signup code is the safer choice. Any overlay needs another full print-and-scan test; visual appeal alone does not establish readability.
Does scanning subscribe the customer?
No. Scanning opens the page. The customer still chooses a channel and completes that channel's signup flow.
