Sold-out announcement wording that avoids wasted trips
Name the sold-out product and date, clarify any remaining service, and give a confirmed next opportunity if you have one. Keep gratitude secondary to the information customers need before travelling.
Say exactly what is no longer available
‘Sold out, thank you!’ may leave customers unsure whether the whole shop has closed or only one loaf is gone. Identify the product or run and explain whether other items remain. If preorders were filled but counter stock remains, say so clearly.
Check the till, order page, and collection shelf before sending. Reserved orders are not the same as available stock. Reassure customers with confirmed orders only when those orders are actually protected in your fulfillment process.
Before you send
- Confirm which product or sales route has sold out.
- Update the ordering page so it no longer accepts unavailable items.
- State whether confirmed collections and other services continue.
- Give the next availability date only if it is confirmed; otherwise explain where updates will appear.
Message examples to adapt
These are original examples. Replace bracketed details and check every promise before using them.
Offer an accurate next step
A signup invitation can help someone who missed the run, but it should promise announcements rather than guaranteed access. If you have no waiting list or automatic item alert, do not suggest joining creates either one.
When the next run is ready, provide a new order route and dates. People may keep or forward the sold-out message, so identify the affected run in both subject and body.
Common questions
Should I apologize for selling out?
A brief acknowledgement is enough. Focus on availability, protected orders, and the next useful opportunity.
Does subscribing reserve future stock?
No. A subscriber receives the announcement and uses your regular ordering process to reserve or buy.
Put this into practice
Let customers choose availability updates, then send sold-out and next-run announcements to that relevant audience.
KeepMPosted collects subscribers through a QR signup page and sends updates by email or Telegram using prepaid credits. Customers can choose the message types you offer. You write and send each update; SMS and scheduled sending are not available.
